Crickets in the shower
2008
Acrylic, toothpicks, adhesive and paper clay.
10 x 13 x 23 cm
Private collection

The first sculpture I’ve made using toothpicks. At the time of creation, I planned the organically inspired form to serve the purpose of studying the visual effects produced by a body possessing an irregular texture, so color was left out to be replaced with discernible visual contrast between the black stems and the white points. As the viewer moves around the sculpture, the sculpture’s colored surface changes and the concentration of whites and blacks differ at each fold and crevice. This creates an intriguing visual effect giving the impression that the sculpture is moving and alive.
